In JAX, among artists’ studios, museums, concept stores, and coffee shops, you’ve surely already met or spotted… Moath Alofi !

You are not in a makeshift artist’s gallery, you are stepping in a whole creative universe to experience…

Moath’s works are there, surrounding you, tucked away in corners of his studio, but their energy fills the minimalist space.

The most curious among you will discover that his works exist for the sole purpose of existing and that contemporary art is entirely subjective. He claims that there is no need to understand it (as he does not), in order to appreciate a work of art.

Driven by a quiet yet persistent fever of exploration, and after briefly explaining his ongoing experimentations, Moath’s work unfolds at the intersection of three essential forces:

« I did not choose photography, photography chose me… »

Moath ALOFI

He tells us that, since early childhood, he would walk around with a camera in his hand and enjoy photographing randomly everything that caught his eye.

Decades later, once back in Medina (Saudi Arabia) – like his Proust’s Madeleine – he felt the need to immortalize his hometown as he used to know it: its spirituality, its neighborhood life, its hidden corners – and what is disappearing silently: a way of life rooted in the Holy city’s itself.

Medina thus became his primary source of inspiration, an open-air artistic medium, and a starting point of anthropological reflection. And so, it begin his exploration of the city and its surrounding region.

In 2013, he started photographing Medina: its doors (Doors of Barlik – 2015), its walls (Walls of Medina – 2016), and its spirituality (NABAWI – 2020)…

He increasingly expanded his explorations, leaving the city and venturing into Medina’s region. During his expeditions, he photographed whatever he encountered: shepherds (Shepherds of Arabia – 2017), abandoned mosques (The Last Tashahud – 2017), cemeteries (Jadath – 2017) and camels’ bones (Thad– 2019).

With Thad, he highlights camels as a resilient symbol of the country’s transformation and the abandonment of a nomadic lifestyle in favor of modernity. A tribute that will be at the core of his recent exhibition : Jooh.

The Nature Anthropologist_

Through his work, we come to understand that the desert is a vast archive waiting to be explored. Moath’ s work invites you in a constant and deep reflection on the relationship between humans and nature, the environment, and the memories it holds : landscapes, volcanoes, natural elements as stones and plants, camels’ bones...

Over the years, he has collected items that he has found along the way, and he is paying tribute to it in his latest exhibition: Jooh (2026). As usual, you are invited to contemplate, reflect and touch these natural archives, which he keeps transforming for the ‘next phase’ of this exhibition.

ALofA’s insights_

Moath’s art is a ‘silent echo of the past’ that he brings back to the present like a constant back-and-forth, blending his essential forces with his archived memories. And, somehow, Moath will find a way to make it resonate years later.

As an art’s observer and consumer, our role is not necessarly to understand the artist or his art. Instead : piece together your own puzzle – catch the essence of his codified art – FEEL it.
